How to Make a Recycled Jean Planter

Step 1: Prepare the Jeans

  1. Choose the jeans: Select a pair of jeans that you no longer wear. Make sure they’re clean and in good enough condition to use for the project.
  2. Cut the legs off: Start by cutting off both legs of the jeans. The length of the legs you cut off will depend on how tall you want your planter to be. You can make it as tall or as short as you like.
  3. Create a base: Turn the jean leg inside out and fold it up to create a base for your planter. You can stitch the bottom or simply glue the fabric together to seal the opening.

Step 2: Shape the Planter

  1. Form the planter shape: Take the remaining part of the jean leg (or the waistband) and fold it into a circular shape to form the sides of the planter. Use the stitching or hot glue to attach the edges, creating a tubular shape.
  2. Attach the base: Position the base you made earlier at the bottom of the planter tube and sew or glue it securely to the sides.
  3. Add a liner: To prevent soil from spilling through the fabric, add a plastic liner or a plastic container inside the jean planter. This ensures that the planter will hold moisture and soil effectively without damaging the fabric.

Step 3: Add Decorative Touches

  1. Personalize your planter: Add some buttonspatches, or even use fabric paint to customize the look of your jean planter. You can make it as vintage or modern as you like, depending on the style you prefer.
  2. Create handles (optional): If you want to make your planter easier to move, you can attach handles made from denim strips, twine, or rope on each side.

Step 4: Fill with Soil and Add Plants

  1. Add potting soil: Fill the planter with potting soil up to about ¾ of the height of the container.
  2. Plant your favorite plants: Now, you’re ready to add your plants. Succulents, small flowers, or herbs work great in these recycled jean planters. Ensure the plants are well positioned and add extra soil around them.
  3. Water the plants: Gently water the plants, making sure not to overdo it. You can place a small tray or plate under the planter to catch any excess water.

Step 5: Place and Enjoy

  • Decorate your space: Once your recycled jean planter is complete, place it on a windowsilldesk, or patio to brighten up the space. You can even create a set of matching planters with different styles and sizes.
